Basalt is a type of Stone found naturally making up the bulk of any volcano. It is dark grey in appearance. When mined, basalt produces Basalt Cobblestone.

Basalt can be harvested with any pickaxe, and yields basalt cobblestone when mined. this can be smelted in a furnace to return the original basalt, which can in turn be crafted into Basalt Brick and Basalt Paver. Currently the only uses for basalt is its high blast resistance and aesthetics.

As a crafting ingredient

Basalt is renewable meaning it can be recreated indefinitely and not just found naturally. When flowing lava is next to a Thermopile being cooled by either two or more ice or snow blocks the flowing lava will turn into basalt. The snow / ice blocks also sometimes melt into water. The thermopiles have to be wired up to a less than full battery or a machine in order for the basalt to be generated.
Lava furthest from middle are the source blocks. There is a thermopile under the battery.

The example above would require the snow blocks replacing and the basalt blocks mining regularly to keep it producing basalt. A more complex set-up is possible.

Volcanoes spawn after trees, meaning that if the volcano replaces a tree some of the tree is often left behind.
